Herc Is Back

Don't get me wrong, I liked the Secret Invasion related issues just fine, but they did lack a little of the fun that a lot of the regular Hercules stuff had. Well, the SI stuff is done with, and Hercules is back to being a hell of a lot of fun. This issue is at the top of the list with the jokes, and as always, they're well done and laugh out loud funny.

In this issue, Hercules and Cho hit an island for some R&R after all of the SI god stuff. Hercules and Namora are getting to know each other pretty well, while Cho is bored on the beach. The R&R gets interrupted by gun toting Amazons. The Amazons kidnap Cho, and are thinking that he might be the best person to sire the next generation of Amazons. Of course they also kill the man after he does all that siring, so Cho is somewhere between damn happy, and thinking it might all be a very bad idea.

The whole issue is played for laughs, and it's great. From the "Atlantean crab hold" to one of the Amazons insinuating that Hercules and Cho might be more than just friends. Good times.

If you're not reading this series, you damn well should be.

Secret Invasion #6 - Spoilers

I swear, this is easily the coolest series I've ever read, where not a damn thing happens. EvilArtist and I were talking about this yesterday, in that for what's happened in the series so far, it could have probably been done easy in about three issues, instead of the six so far.

However, it's still damn cool.

The issue starts with Marvel Boy on a flying bike looking thing, finding a dying Captain Marvel, who was wailing on Skrull ships in the last issue. The Captain tells the Boy that he has to help the humans, and then dies.

The issue then jumps to the Skrull propaganda machine, that's talking about how they just want to help, don't resist, everything is going to be fantastic soon, and so on. The text is set over top of several pictures of heroes fighting back in San Francisco, Attilan, Wakanda, The Savage Land, and Israel.

We then flip to Camp Hammond, where the Skrulls have set up shop as their main HQ. You learn a few things here:

1 - That Spiderwoman, AKA The Skrull Queen is still alive.

2 - The Skrulls learn that Reed Richards escaped.

3 - The Skrulls talk about The Wasp, stating that as long as she is with the others, the Skrulls will win. Sounds like Wasp is some sort of last resort doomsday thing.

It then flips to all the heroes that were in The Savage Land (Reed Richards and all the Avengers mostly) all heading to New York. Wasp is still with them. They get to New York, and it looks like the war zone it currently is.

The next part was ok. There's a bunch of people that have all decided that they love the Skrulls, and they really will make their lives better. The Skrulls of course turn on them at some point, and it all goes badly for the humans until….

Nick Fury, his gang whose called The Secret Warriors, and The Young Avengers, start wailing on some Skrulls. The Hood also has his gang together, and they're getting ready to enter the fight. This is where it gets good. There's a loud BOOM with flashes of lighting.

you then see Central Park. Thor is standing in the middle of it, slamming his hammer on the ground, getting everyone's attention. Including the Skrulls, who decide to gather ALL of their troops, and go after Thor.

Captain America then shows up to where Thor is, followed closely by all of the heroes that were heading back to New York. Someone asks Thor what he's doing, and he says "Summoning The Battle That Must Be Fought", and slams his hammer on the ground again. Gotta love it when the God Of Thunder decides to pick a spot, let everyone know he's there, and take on all comers.

The whole of the Skrull army shows up, and some words are exchanged. The Thunderbolts also show up, as do The Hood and his gang. Iron Man actually tells the Skrulls to leave, as their last warning. The Skrulls refuse of course, and you get the final couple of panels:

And the fight is on.

I'm not even a huge Avengers fan, and the whole thing made me geek out.

Come on, this was just damn cool all the way around.

Nag Nag Nag

Ok, so yeah, I bought Titans #5. It wasn't my fault though. The comic book shop we always hit, The Laughing Ogre, still didn't have any power. When I got my pull, it was hard to see, and I ended up buying it by accident. Honest. It happened just like that. I swear.

Ok, so all of that is a total lie, except for the shop still not having power. The fact is that I bought it partly for the horrible train wreck it is, and partly because I still have that nostalgic hope that it's going to be worth reading at some point. The Titans was one of my favorites once upon a time, and so I still have a soft spot for them. Which is not a good thing.

So issue #5 still sucked, but it sucked less than usual. I guess that's a sort of compliment. This was one of those in-between story lines kind of issues, where the characters personal lives take center stage. Which might be why this one was better than the others, since there's really not much of a plot to bother with.

We have Raven doing the whole "woe is me" angst thing about how she's part evil and all of that. Which is pretty damn boring. The only good thing about this is Changeling . He shows up at Raven's school as a green polar bear. No lie. He tells everyone he's a Bear-A-Gram. It's all played for fun, and the artist does an amazing job with bear facial expressions, and it's a good little segment. Easily the best in the first five issues.

The rest of the issue is kind of filler, but it was ok. Cyborg actually gets legs, so he might do something other than just float around in the hover chair he was sporting. Nightwing and Starfire talk about their relationship, and Raven and Changeling have a heart to heart talk filled with more Raven angst. All of it's not bad, but not exactly exciting.

In the end, Trigon's My Three Sons show up, turn Raven all evil, beat on Changeling, and then Raven runs off with them.

An improvement overall, but there's really nothing all that exciting here to warrant buying it. I'm hoping It'll pick up in the next issue, but I'm not really expecting it to. There's half a chance I'll get suckered into #6, even though I said I wouldn't buy this one. Speaking of suckers, they say there's one born every minute, and it seems that's true for me every time I hit the "T" section at the store, and there's a new Titans issue.

It's also sad that I still hold out hope that when the writing team changes, it'll be worth buying.

Very sad.

I should have just kicked him

So I want everyone to read the post two down from this one by Shark. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Everyone finished? Good.

Now someone ask Shark what he bought today. As a matter of fact, everyone who reads this blog (all four of you), please write in and ask Shark what he bought today.

Next time I’m just going to kick him and take three dollars out of his wallet.

No Power = Bad

I was going to have something up this morning about Secret Invasion #6, since the ending was WAY cool in my opinion, but a power outage nixed that idea. Winds got up to 75mph around here and thrashed everything, and we were without power until this morning. If possible, I'll try to get something up this afternoon, but no promises.

I did want to pass along an Iron Man movie thing though. Over at this site HERE, there's an interview with the Director of Iron Man, Jon Favreau. The interview is about an hour long, and takes a little time to load, but really good if you're interested in a lot of the behind the scenes stuff. Favreau discusses everything from the movie, future movies, what it was like to do the movie, ideas for the future, and a lot of extra things that pop up from the questions.
