Quick Hits

Glass of wine in hand.

Blank Post before me.

Here we go.

  • Can we all agree that Final Crisis was a decent high concept, but far from being  Morrison's best work in execution?
  • How about we say the same for Bendis and  Secret Invasion?
  • Four bucks a comic? Bullshit.
  • I want to be more interested in Dark Reign than I actually am. I'm betting the previous bullet has a mega crapload to do with that
  • I'm now four episodes behind on Heroes
  • And five behind on Lost.
  • My DVR is set to keep 7 episodes before it starts deleting them. Historically once shit starts getting deleted I stop caring and kill them all. The clock is ticking on those two shows.
  • In spite of knowing I would seriously regret it the next day, I'm still debating a midnight showing of Watchmen on Thursday.
  • I haven't bagged and boarded a comic since we were all posting regularly. If you happen to have seen some of my weekly reading lists, that gives you an idea of how much work I have to do.
  • Am I the only one who thinks that X-Factor is the best X-Book going right now?
  • Does it negate my previous statement if I'm only reading two X-Books regularly?
  • I have no intention of buying any of the Ultimate titles after Ultimatum has come and gone.
  • If anyone out there reading this is planning on buying "Battle for the Cowl" could you write in and explain to me why?
  • What's the last statement anyone has read from Didio or Quesada that made the last bit of damned sense? I can't remember now.
  • Batman: The Brave and the Bold is an awesome cartoon. For all my efforts to hook my son on Batman : The Animated Series, Brave and the Bold is what has him hooked on Batman.
  • Ditto that for Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Little dude loses his freakin' mind every time that show comes on tv.
  • Not so much the case for Wolverine and the Xmen. Maybe we just haven't given it enough of a shot.
  • Am I the only nerd who has never seen an episode of the new Battlestar Galactica?
  • Ghost Shark and I have been going through some kind of horror movie remake revival. Thus far this year we've hit My Bloody Valentine and Friday the 13th. I would not want to bet money against us going to see Last House of the Left as well.
  • I cannot get "I'm on A Boat" by The Lonely Island out of my head. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go search it on youtube. If you don't think it's funny, you are probably on this sight by accident anyhow.

And finally . . .

  • I just finished up all The Sandman trades. Incredible work made even more incredible by the fact I got them all 50% off.I'm willing to bet that has a ton to do with my general discontent with the rest of comics. But that probably deserves it's own post at a later date.

Just passing by

Boy this place is starting to collect some serious dust. Someone should have hired a maid or something.

Been feeling generally discontent with my comics as of late. Everyone beware as this feeling might generate a honest to gawd full blown blog post. Or maybe it’s just gas and will pass soon.

Stay tuned. . .

Super Slak-A-Tude

Um…yeah. There hasn't been a damn thing up here in freaking weeks. DVO had a few as of late, but the Monkey was no where to be seen, so it kind of fell to me to keep those of you that actually show up here mildly entertained, and that train went completely off the tracks for some reason.

I do still have a lot to post about, so expect to see some things from me either late today, or early tomorrow, and then there should be a steady stream of stuff from then on out. Or at least that the plan.

Heroes Season 3

Well Heroes certainly did not screw around coming out of the gate this season. Almost as if they said "You thought season 2 was too slow? Here, take this."

There are certainly some potentially interesting plot threads to go through the season. Although I do have a few nits to pick (don't I always?)

POTENTIALLY SPOILERISH STUFF FOLLOWS!!!!!!

#1. So we have to save the future again? Really? What's wrong with saving the present? I'm sure there's some pretty bad shit going on in the present right? Are there no wars in the Heroes universe? No poverty? Isn't there potentially a group of survivors thought dead from a plane crash stranded on an unknown island somewhere that need rescued?

#2. The sequence with Sylar and Claire I thought was pretty good, but how did he find her so fast? To our knowledge the Bennett family was still pretty well in hiding and the only folks who knew who they were and where they were came from "The Company". I get that it makes for a hell of an opening, but boy do you have to make a bit of a leap on how Sylar got there.

#3. Hiro and Ando. Instead of just telling Ando that Ando kills him in the futurue wouldnt it have been prudent for Hiro to tell Ando "It's okay though, because about 30 seconds later the whole world seems to have epxloded so it looks like we would both have been dead anyhow. But maybe if you and I can keep the world from blowing up, I don't have to worry about you killing me." You know being best friends all, perhaps full disclosure is a good policy. Especially when the fate of the world hangs in the balance. I'm just sayin'.

#4. Are we really gonna rip off The Fly so blatantly in Mohinder's story arc? Don't get me wrong, mad props to the boy for tagging Maya, but still. science experiment on himself, suddenly he faster, stronger, more agile than he's ever been, he sucks down chocolate milks by the metric crapload and fucks like a bunny rabbit? Oh yeah, and then he start molting. David Cronenberg should sue someone.

#5. So Mrs. Petrelli chastises "evil" Peter about having screwed up the future timeline. But wasn't she the one that was convinced that Manhattan had to be destroyed in season 1? Since that didn't happen how does she even know what this timeline holds? OR are we supposed to believe she so fucking smart that she knew her sons would save Manhattan and it was all a really elaborate plot to make this timeline happen? Er, that is of course until "evil" Peter fucked this timeline up. Tim Kring should go ask some Xmen writers about fucking around with time travel and alternate timelines in your stories too much, and Jeph Loeb sure as fuck should know better.

So who knows where this all leaves us. I think they kicked up enough potential I'll follow along for the ride, but there are more than a few hints of either sloppy or lazy storytelling, methinks.

Well Damn

Guardians Of The Galaxy #5

(Spoilers after the red text that says something about spoilers)

Pretty much all hell breaks loose in this issue. It's part of the whole Secret Invasion thing, and the jist of the story line is that Skrulls are on Knowhere, nobody knows who they can trust, and so on.

Everything is going bad for the team. There was an explosion, by the Skrulls, that crippled the teleportation thingy that they use to run around the galaxy, there's Skrulls, there's a radiation leak, Knowhere's Council is blaming the team for everything that's happening and Drax is missing.

After the last issue, I was a little worried that the whole Secret Invasion tie-in wasn't going to be that good. Last issue felt a little rushed, and felt a little like they were just trying to make it fit. Well, even if that was the case, the writers got back on their feet in a hurry. While there's not the normal wit of most issues, though there's still a good joke in there, this one is excellent in the "ok, didn't see that coming" category.

Rating: 4 Stars

I thought about giving it 5 stars, as it's a good issue, but settled on 4 stars for some unknown reason.

***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***

I'm trying to do a little better about giving a review of the issue, and then giving out the spoilers. Unless I just flat out say it's a spoiler thing in the post title, like with the Secret Invasion stuff. That way people can get an idea of the issue, and not get the details, or get both if they want. We'll see how long I keep it up.

The Knowhere Council needs to be jetisoned into space. They play the part of that know it all group in charge that won't listen to a damn bit of reason. Hopefully they go away soon.

The Council, in their idiot wisdom, confines the team to their quarters, and sends the Luminals to track down Drax. To which Drax procedes to kick the hell out of them through the whole issue.

Then there's a couple of set up things for the ending. One, Cosmo, the talking Russian cosmonaut dog, tells everyone that they'll stay put, and he'll find Drax. Two, Warlock is in the Celestial brain, trying to see if he can use it to find the Skrulls. Three, Quasar sneaks out to find Drax.

Ok, now all the interesting stuff happens.

First, Starhawk shows up again, starts babbling about the future and that there shouldn't be a Guardians team yet, and that Major Victory "smells of dead universes" which I think would probably smell pretty bad. I mean, dead things don't smell good at all, and I can't imagine the stick of a whole dead universe. To set things right though, Starhawk has decided to destroy Major Victory, and all of Knowhere.

Second, Warlock finds that Cosmo is helping the Skrulls, with Cosmo even giving the always creepy "he loves you" line. It's possible that there's a lot more than meets the eye here, but regardless, Warlock and Comso start fighting and it actually looks like it might go badly for Warlock.

Finally, Quasar finds Drax, whose decided the best way to find the Skrulls is to kill everyone. You know, cause then they revert to Skrull form and all, and you can tell whose who. Quasar finds him putting bombs all over the place, and the last scene in the issue is Drax hitting the button to set them off.

Pretty wild issue overall. I'm super interested to see how it all turns out, and pissed off that I have to wait a whole month. Good stuff though.
