The $2.99 Experiment

So I came up with this plan awhile back to get us all reading new stuff and to hopefully spark some more posting here in the blog. The plan was the Ghost, EvilArtist, and myself would chuck a comic into each others stack every so many weeks. My thinking was it would be interesting to see how many times we struck gold and how many times we went bust on books our friends inflicted upon us.

The project was lovingly (and rather uncreatively) dubbed The "Spend $2.99 of your buddy's money" experiment.

Like I said. Uncreative, but it gets the point across. Anyhow, we had to lay some simple but enforcable ground rules to the whole thing.

  • It has to be a regularly priced book ($2.99)
  • It has to be something you have a passing curiosity about, but not so much so that you actually bought it yourself.
  • You can't knowingly hand anyone a comic you know to be shitty or expect to be shitty (AKA, the Countdown clause)
  • Each of us has to post in the blog about the book inflicted upon us after reading it.

Pretty simple don't you think? Anyhow, we had talked about it for several weeks and just never did it. Actually to be more accurate we always forgot about it while we were in the store. So today I remembered in advance and opted to invoke the experiment. The rotation went as follows:

  • I made Ghost buy Mystic Arcana: Scarlet Witch
  • EvilArtist gave me The Order #1
  • Ghost gave the Artist Elephantmen #10(?) We aren't certain on the number, but it had a hippo dressed like an old gumshoe detective in it which sold Ghost on the idea.

I don't know how everyone else feels, but I think I made out okay. I had a passing interest in The Order, but had put both issues back on the shelf when they showed up in my pull without my consent. The fact I was forced to buy it today might be considered karma.

So likely tomorrow there will be something in the way of a review of the book. But for tonight we will stick with the weekly reading list:

  1. The Order #1
  2. Green Arrow: Year One #4
  3. Batman #668
  4. Thunderbolts #116
  5. Black Summer #2
  6. The Immortal Iron Fist #8
  7. Astonishing X-Men #22

Unfortunately no wine selection tonight. I've been getting over a cold and alcohol just hasn't sounded good at all.
