The Fantastic Five

I picked up the first three of the Fantastic Five mini-series pretty much on a whim. I can't say that I was ever an FF fan. It's not that I didn't like them, it just wasn't my thing. Maybe it was the movies, maybe it was the last few issues of the regular Fantastic Four issues I picked up, who knows, but suddenly I have an interest in them. Plus, I'm a big Doctor Doom fan, and they pretty much had me sold when I started to flip through the first one, and he thumps Namor by page 5.

The basic idea is that this is set in the future of the Marvel Universe. Franklin Richards is all grown up, the Thing has two kids (don't try to think about that too much, just roll with it and move on) and an ex-wife, and Torch is married to a Skrull and has a kid also. I never read the original FF5 issues back in 1998, but it looks like this happens after that, and they do give you a little background.

The plot is pretty straight forward, with Doc Doom trying to wipe out the FF5. The dialog can get a little goofy at times, as there are points where it's just over the top. Mostly when they have Doom yapping about making people kneel before him, how much superior he is, and cutting everyone down as inferior. Which is a disappointment, because as I mentioned, I like Doom.

There are some minor twists in it, but nothing all that shocking, or out of left field. It's a decent read so far, and pretty well plotted out. I'm looking forward to the final two issues to see how it all wraps up.
