Well Damn
Guardians Of The Galaxy #5
(Spoilers after the red text that says something about spoilers)
Pretty much all hell breaks loose in this issue. It's part of the whole Secret Invasion thing, and the jist of the story line is that Skrulls are on Knowhere, nobody knows who they can trust, and so on.
Everything is going bad for the team. There was an explosion, by the Skrulls, that crippled the teleportation thingy that they use to run around the galaxy, there's Skrulls, there's a radiation leak, Knowhere's Council is blaming the team for everything that's happening and Drax is missing.
After the last issue, I was a little worried that the whole Secret Invasion tie-in wasn't going to be that good. Last issue felt a little rushed, and felt a little like they were just trying to make it fit. Well, even if that was the case, the writers got back on their feet in a hurry. While there's not the normal wit of most issues, though there's still a good joke in there, this one is excellent in the "ok, didn't see that coming" category.
Rating: 4 Stars
I thought about giving it 5 stars, as it's a good issue, but settled on 4 stars for some unknown reason.
***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***
I'm trying to do a little better about giving a review of the issue, and then giving out the spoilers. Unless I just flat out say it's a spoiler thing in the post title, like with the Secret Invasion stuff. That way people can get an idea of the issue, and not get the details, or get both if they want. We'll see how long I keep it up.
The Knowhere Council needs to be jetisoned into space. They play the part of that know it all group in charge that won't listen to a damn bit of reason. Hopefully they go away soon.
The Council, in their idiot wisdom, confines the team to their quarters, and sends the Luminals to track down Drax. To which Drax procedes to kick the hell out of them through the whole issue.
Then there's a couple of set up things for the ending. One, Cosmo, the talking Russian cosmonaut dog, tells everyone that they'll stay put, and he'll find Drax. Two, Warlock is in the Celestial brain, trying to see if he can use it to find the Skrulls. Three, Quasar sneaks out to find Drax.
Ok, now all the interesting stuff happens.
First, Starhawk shows up again, starts babbling about the future and that there shouldn't be a Guardians team yet, and that Major Victory "smells of dead universes" which I think would probably smell pretty bad. I mean, dead things don't smell good at all, and I can't imagine the stick of a whole dead universe. To set things right though, Starhawk has decided to destroy Major Victory, and all of Knowhere.
Second, Warlock finds that Cosmo is helping the Skrulls, with Cosmo even giving the always creepy "he loves you" line. It's possible that there's a lot more than meets the eye here, but regardless, Warlock and Comso start fighting and it actually looks like it might go badly for Warlock.
Finally, Quasar finds Drax, whose decided the best way to find the Skrulls is to kill everyone. You know, cause then they revert to Skrull form and all, and you can tell whose who. Quasar finds him putting bombs all over the place, and the last scene in the issue is Drax hitting the button to set them off.
Pretty wild issue overall. I'm super interested to see how it all turns out, and pissed off that I have to wait a whole month. Good stuff though.
