Nag Nag Nag

Ok, so yeah, I bought Titans #5. It wasn't my fault though. The comic book shop we always hit, The Laughing Ogre, still didn't have any power. When I got my pull, it was hard to see, and I ended up buying it by accident. Honest. It happened just like that. I swear.

Ok, so all of that is a total lie, except for the shop still not having power. The fact is that I bought it partly for the horrible train wreck it is, and partly because I still have that nostalgic hope that it's going to be worth reading at some point. The Titans was one of my favorites once upon a time, and so I still have a soft spot for them. Which is not a good thing.

So issue #5 still sucked, but it sucked less than usual. I guess that's a sort of compliment. This was one of those in-between story lines kind of issues, where the characters personal lives take center stage. Which might be why this one was better than the others, since there's really not much of a plot to bother with.

We have Raven doing the whole "woe is me" angst thing about how she's part evil and all of that. Which is pretty damn boring. The only good thing about this is Changeling . He shows up at Raven's school as a green polar bear. No lie. He tells everyone he's a Bear-A-Gram. It's all played for fun, and the artist does an amazing job with bear facial expressions, and it's a good little segment. Easily the best in the first five issues.

The rest of the issue is kind of filler, but it was ok. Cyborg actually gets legs, so he might do something other than just float around in the hover chair he was sporting. Nightwing and Starfire talk about their relationship, and Raven and Changeling have a heart to heart talk filled with more Raven angst. All of it's not bad, but not exactly exciting.

In the end, Trigon's My Three Sons show up, turn Raven all evil, beat on Changeling, and then Raven runs off with them.

An improvement overall, but there's really nothing all that exciting here to warrant buying it. I'm hoping It'll pick up in the next issue, but I'm not really expecting it to. There's half a chance I'll get suckered into #6, even though I said I wouldn't buy this one. Speaking of suckers, they say there's one born every minute, and it seems that's true for me every time I hit the "T" section at the store, and there's a new Titans issue.

It's also sad that I still hold out hope that when the writing team changes, it'll be worth buying.

Very sad.
