Guardian’s First Only OK Issue

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't the same greatness it's had since it started, and even reaching back into the Annihilation: Conquest series.

This is the first issue that deals with Secret Invasion, and I actually think that was the cause of the problem overall. I'll admit I was interested in seeing what they were going to do, and I'm really interested to see where it's leading. At SDCC, Marvel mentioned that there would be a big galactic aftermath to SI, which sounds like it could be very cool, and hopefully on par with the two Annihilation series.

The trouble here is that after reading this issue, I'm really thinking that they should have just left the Guardians alone, let them do their own thing, and then get them involved in the SI aftermath. It just seems like they're trying a little too hard to drag them into the SI story line.

The story in this issue is also pretty simple too, which is something I don't really expect from this team. Again though, I really wonder if it's the difference between writing what they want, and what they have to, to be a part of SI.

The idea is almost a total mirror version of SI so far. I'll spoil it a little for you, but not too much I don't think. Something bad happens, they find out there's Skrulls, they begin to distrust each other, and things fall apart. Sound familiar?

There are some interesting points, in that there's a big secret about the team revealed, and the ongoing stuff with Major Victory. Though he hasn't shown up much so far, I'm actually hoping that Major Victory sticks around for a while and runs with the team some.

Hopefully they resolve all of the Skrull stuff very soon, and we can get past it to either the SI aftermath galactic stuff (which I hope if good), or back to the story before the SI related stuff. I do still have a lot of faith in the writing team though, so if they have to slog through a few more issues of being SI related, that they'll get back on their feet, and give us some good stuff.

Rating: 4 stars

Still worth the money. Also a chance it's just more of a set up issue for the coming story line, and they got it over with in one issue.
