Catching Up A Little

Alright, I'm so damn far behind in reviewing stuff that it's getting silly. Plus I still have some tales to tell from SDCC, and I'm not sure when I'm going to get those done. I thought I would go through a few things, get a little caught up at least, and hopefully have a lot more on Monday. Or next Wednesday. Or maybe sometime in November. Anyway….

Thor #10

Holy crap did this comic become a total snooze fest. In this whole issue, the parts I liked the best, and maybe in last issue too, was the townspeople being comic relief. In this one, they take a whole issue to finish up the thing on whether or not Balder is Thor's brother. Well, I guess it would be half brother. Whatever.

Regardless, Thor really hasn't been doing a damn thing for several issues now, and I think the Balder story has gone on WAY too long. This series started out pretty good, dodged some pitfalls that I thought it might run into, just to become a boring soap opera. It wasn't that it was badly written or anything, there just doesn't seem to be any kind of payoff. You get the answer this issue about who Balder's dad really is, and it was pretty much an "Uh, ok, so what?" moment. If it's a set up for something down the line, that's fine, but in that case it should have stayed as a B story the whole time.

Wasn't terrible, but was a huge yawn.

Dresden Files #1-4

I was a little worried about this series, until I saw Jim Butcher speak at SDCC, which was awesome by the way. Really nice guy, answered everyone's questions really well, and genuinely seemed to be happy to be answering said questions. He's also pretty damn funny. So someone asked him about the set of comics, and he explained what all was going on, and added in some interesting bits.

They are going to be doing his first book, Storm Front, in comic form very soon. This was a short lead in series to the book, and actually takes place right before Storm Front starts. Not only does it take place right before that, but Butcher said he got the general idea for the story from Storm Front, since in the book Murphy says something along the lines of Dresden "helping them out with that thing at the zoo". I might be messing the quote up a bit, but that's the general idea. It was also interesting to hear him say that he has a lot of the final say about the art, and the Dresden in the comic book is really close to the image Butcher has of him when writing.

Finally, once Storm Front is completed in it's comic book incarnation, Butcher will be writing another mini-series that will fit in between Storm Front and his second book, Full Moon, which is also set to become a comic book series.

I'm looking forward to these quite a bit, even though I've read all of the Dresden books he's written (11 so far I think it is).

The mini-series is good, and seems to fit with the books pretty well. Not a must read, but if you're a Butcher fan, go out and grab it. If you're not a Butcher fan yet, grab this series, and look for Storm Front when it hits the shelves. If you even mildly like this series, you'll love Storm Front when it comes out.

New Avengers #43

What the freaking hell does Marvel have against Captain America?

(Spoilers below)

Ok, so I've never been a huge Captain America fan. He seemed like he was a two dimensional character most of the time. Come on though, leave the damn guy alone.

In the last year (or so) they killed him at the end or right after Civil War.

Then, they screw with him by bringing him back in the Avengers Invaders series, knowing the whole time that he's going to have to go back into the past and get frozen, thawed, create the Avengers, and ultimately die. It's really going to be like killing him again.

Finally, they make him a Skrull, who totally believes that he's Captain America. In this issue, they explain how they made the Cap Skrull, and then go about killing him again. The whole time he's laying there dying, now all green Skrull like, he still thinks he's Captain America.

What. The. Hell.

Leave the poor guy alone. He's dead. Leave it at that. I swear if they bring back some alternate reality Captain America, when he bites it, someone better yell "They killed Captain America." "You bastards!" cause it's starting to get that bad.

Alright, it's after midnight, and I need to crash. I might get some other stuff up tomorrow, so look for something in the late afternoon, but I make no promises.
