Quick Updates
I've slacked a bit since the boys came back from SDCC. I was quite content to let Shark update you all on the things that he picked up at the con while I worked on pulling my shit together to make time to post. Unfortunately I am dog ass tired at this point so you ain't getting much in the way of an update.
But a few quick tidbits anyhow:
Mini DVO and I have been pretty well mowing through Marvel Ultimate Alliance. It's been entertaining as hell on multiple levels. First, its just generally mindlessly easy to play and still fun. Think Gauntlet with superheroes. That mostly sums it up. Second, it's been amusing to watch little dude pick up some of my inflection and gaming banter as we've played. Some particularly nasty bad guy will show up on the screw and he'll say "Okay, that's gonna hurt". If I'm off whupping on a different minion and he gets surrounded I'll hear "Daddy, I could use a little help over here!". Nothing like having your own little sarcastic jabs shot back at you by your five year old.
And then lastly, the story is so damned goofy that it makes practically no sense whatsoever. They've got villains in places where they have no business being and no real chance of survival. Currently we are in Asgard trying to find Odin. If you haven't played the game, don't even ask about the circumstances that got us here. Along the way we had to whup the Wrecking Crew at the Bifrost Bridge. Okay, makes sense (sort of) since they have been imbued with Asgardian like powers. Later though we come across Tyr and Heimdall that need freed. And who you might ask is guarding them? Tyr was guarded by the Scorpion and the Lizard. I shit you not. Who is their right fucking mind leaves Spidey villains to guard a God? I don't care if he is bound up, if he gets out that's instant detah for those guys. And Heimdall? He had Rhino and Shocker guarding him. Now in their defense he was in cased in a block of ice, so maybe they had a shot.
Either way, it's been an absolute blast to play. Mini DVO has even figured out that certain combinations of characters give us special bonuses. So now he'll say "Let's switch to the Fantastic Four!" or "Now lets be the Avengers!". See? It's an educational game. Okay, so even if that last part is a reach we sure as hell have gotten my $5 out of it.
While the boys were in San Diego I had Shark do a little searching in the 50% off bins for some trades I've been looking for. He didn't find too much on my list, but I did land two volumes of Sandman and volume # 7 of The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead was one of these books that after reading volume # 6 I said I was done with because it had just officially gone to some very dark places I was no longer comfortable with. Things like Rape and Torture just aren't my cup of tea ever. Yet here I am just off finishing reading volume #7. I may try to muster a post later in the week with some more in depth thoughts on the series and wrap it with a few broader thoughts on the announcement about Kirkman being made a partner at Image.
For now though, the weekly reading list . . .
- Crossed #0 - Why do I continue do damn my soul to hell by reading shit written by Garth Ennis? Who am I kidding I was going to hell a long time ago for many other reasons. Ennis is just providing the reading material.
- Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas #2 - It had been long enough since the first issue I damn near forgot this series existed. Okay so it's only been like three months, but that was still sufficient for it to leave my mind.
- Ultimate Origins #3 - I'm still sorta waiting for the "everything is connected" moment in this series.
- Hulk #5 - If you can't read this book and laugh, you have no soul.
- Invincible Iron Man #4 - I was pretty stoked about reading Fraction's first issue of Uncanny Xmen (being #500 of course) and then kinda let down afterwards. Fortunately he has still been hot everywhere else.
- Final Crisis #3 - It probably doesn't deserve to be at the end of the list. But given it'll be two months before another one comes out, what can it hurt?
