Spiderman 3

*sigh*

Here's the thing.

I don't really want to hate on this movie. I really don't. Because I really don't hate it.

I don't like it much, but I don't hate it.

Oh sure there are definitely things to hate on.

  • Like Harry's butler, the forensics expert, who can identify the wounds Norman had came from his own blades
  • Or the fact that he tells Harry this information several years after the fact, after he's pumped himself full of Goblin serum and tried to kill his best friend (Thanks alot, Dick.)
  • Or the pumpkin bomb that can disintegrate Eddie Brock and the Symbiote but only scar Harry Osoborn.
  • Or the way that MJ has really been a whiney and weak character for three movies.
  • Or evil skater haircut Peter.
  • Or the stupid ass dance sequence in the jazz club.
  • Or the fact that we let Sandman go after he asked forgiveness for Uncle Ben's death. Despite the fact he partnered up with an evil alien symbiote and kicked the shit out of NYPD's finest for a couple of hours.

Sure there's all that.

My big problem with the film though?

Just flat out too busy. Too Crowded. I had feared this from the time I heard the rumors of multiple villains. Have we had a superhero movie with mutliple villains yet that's worked? All the ones I can think of suffered from not being able to develop the stories between our hero and each villain enough to make it work. Spidey 3 was no different.

Truthfully, I think there was potential for a couple of different full length movies there. I really think you could have dedicated a whole movie to the Goblin story arc and better devloped the lover triangle between Peter, Harry and MJ. Hell, you coulda add Gwen to that story and and a love square or something. Maybe even have MJ and Gwen get on just for giggles. Then of course you also get the opportunity to whack Gwen Stacy which is what all the serious fanboys were probably clamoring for anyhow.

As much as I don't care for Venom, I think you likely could've done a whole movie around the black costume and Venom. I think it might have been hard to carry a flick with Sandman by himself, especially given they were trying to throw the sympathetic bad guy card with him. But even so, I guess you coulda had him in a Venom flick playing the Harry role of swithcing sides to help Spidey defeat Venom.

But what we got was two villains, thrown in with resolving the Harry/Goblin thing, and then toss in Gwen stacy (who in this flick really served no purpose other than to say we got her in there) and you just end up with a mess. The third act really suffered from the weakest of reasons to move all the pieces into place for the last big battle.

"Hey Flint Marko! I may just be a washed up photographer with a crazy alien symbiote as a birthday suit, but I wanted to track you down to help me kill Spiderman. Because I know that he kept you from helping you daughter. Even though no one else in the city, including the cops, knew that. Because as I said I'm a washed up photographer so I know how to find out these things."

*sigh*

So I don't hate it. I had actually prepared myself months ago for disappointment. I just think I saw enough potential in the things Sam Raimi started (even within this flick) that I hoped for more than I got.

I get most of what you're saying, I guess I just don't feel as strongly about it. Except for the Dark Peter part, as there was absolutely no need for it. I didn't hate it, as it was a little amusing, but overall I just didn't care. I wanted to get back to the rest of the story, rather than seeing him run around like a dork for ten minutes. How exactly does feeling powerful and angry translate into running around, smiling, and acting like Leisure Suit Larry?
