Countdown to Hatred
So if you've paid attention to the timer on the right hand side of this site at all, you know that we are under a week from the San Diego ComicCon. Even if you haven't paid attention to the timer, that's damn near all Shark has talked about in his posts this week, so you've likely gotten the hint. Either way, it also officially puts us under a week from my seething with hatred for the rest of the gang here at DCR. Mostly because I will be the only guy here manning the ship while they are in San Diego. Oh yes, we hatesssss themssss.
Okay not really. I could have gone to the Con, I chose not to. It wasn't out of any lack of desire to go, believe me. If you go back and read our posts coming out of the Con last year, we undoubtedly had a blast. It just happens that I have things much closer to home that I need to be making a much higher priority. So while I will miss the comics (and drinking), costumes (and drinking), artist panels (and drinking), the exhibit floor (and drinking), the movie sneak peeks (and drinking), and the San Diego sun (did I mention the drinking?) I'm also quite content to be here at home next weekend.
They gang has concocted a plan in which they believe they will be able to do some daily updates from the Con to the blog for your enjoyment. I offered to have them just send the stuff to me and I would do the heavy lifting on this end, but being control freaks (as we all are really) they are going to take a crack at it from there. Of course I remember the rather chaotic (and oft hung over) pace we set last year so I am a bit of a skeptic that they will actually find the time to produce, but we shall see. Besides, if they don't I will just bombard the site with four days of Chuck Norris jokes. So you've got that to look forward to.
This weekend is one of the bi-annual City of Heroes/Villains double experience weekends. From Friday to Sunday your character gains double experience, double influence, double cheese, double shot, double whatever. So if you're an old player looking to possibly come back, this is the weekend to do it. If you are a new player considering giving it a crack you can sign up for the free trials over here. Normally on these 2X weekends the group of us that still play will posse up and play more in three days than we have in the last six months. With The Monkey spending the latter half of the week in the Florida Keys and the rest of us pretty busy as well, I'm not sure we'll actually "posse up" per se, but I do plan on slipping some time in throughout the weekend. Should that occur it will likely incite a new CoH post next week at some stage.
Also this weekend is the release of The Dark Knight. But unless you've been living under a rock you already know that. I gotta say the hype around this is pretty much goddam ridiculous at this stage. I'm sure we've all at least been slightly aware of the viral marketing campaign for well more than a year now, but it's really been cranked up in recent months. So now that advanced screenings have occurred and folks are praising it as the best superhero movie ever conceived and folks are throwing around hype like Ledger's joke is Oscar nominee worthy, it's officially in the realm of hype insanity.
I've been telling the guys here at DCR for a couple months now I have a fear that this flick isn't going to be good. Part of that is never believing that a movie can live up to its hype, part of it is some seriously ass skepticism that we can get three good comicbook flicks in one summer (maybe four as I've not seen Hellboy yet), and part of it is me just trying to psyche myself out so as to not be disappointed with the results. I certainly want it to be a great movie. Hell, even Mrs DVO who normally doesn't watch movies at all (let alone comic book movies) is actually interested in seeing it. So hopefully we'll slip in our normal Sunday matinee and I'll have my thoughts on it for Monday.
That's all for now as my accursed browser crashed halfway through the creation of this post, so technically I wrote two posts for you today as I had to recreate the damn thing. Hopefully i'll be back later in the day with the reading list.
