Last Weeks Comic Fun

I was really planning on posting this stuff last Friday, but I've been moving all weekend into a new house, and it took me until today to even get my computer up and running, so all of this is a little late. If you are a few comics behind some of the ones listed below, there might be some spoilers. Let's get started:

Nova #14

In the last issue, Galactus started eating the planet Orbucen. Nova showed up to help the people escape the planet, since there really wasn't anything he could do about Galactus. While helping the people, Nova encountered a psionic entity called Harrow, who seems to be possessing people and using them to kill other people, just for the fun of it.

Nova imprisoned Harrow, and then started helping people get to their ships. Right before the ships were to lift off and evacuate the planet, the electromagnetic disruptions from Galactus eating the planet start messing with the ships engines, and the whole population was going nowhere fast.

At the end of the last issue, Nova heads up to see if he can talk Galactus into slowing down a little, and letting the people escape. He runs into Galactus' newly re-upped herald Silver Surfer.

Silver Surfer and Nova tangle a little bit, and it seems that Surfer is a lot stronger than he used to be, and a hell of a lot more obedient. They also deal with the entity Harrow escaping again.

I really liked the issue, in that Nova was just trying to get Galactus to slow down his feeding a bit, rather than coming up with some way to stop him. The Harrow bit wasn't all that great in this issue, but it was totally a "B" storyline, so not a big deal.

It's interesting the way they are handling Surfer at the moment, since he joined up with the Big Purple Guy in the pages of Annihilation: Conquest. He doesn't seem like the same character at all, and I hope that they use him some more in the coming issues of either Nova or Guardians of the Galaxy, and we learn more about what's going on with him.

The issue ends with a cliff-hanger, but I kind of already see how it's going to be resolved. Though you never know, they might surprise me.

Overall, another solid issue of Nova. Also of note, although I still really like the art of the comic itself, the cover was just sort of bad. It looks like they were trying to make Surfer look like liquid metal maybe? Regardless, I thought it was a poor choice.

The Incredible Hercules #117

Not much to say about this one really, in that not a whole hell of a lot happens. It's more of an issue to set everything up for the coming battle against the Skrull gods. You heard that right, there's going to be a big god fight.

It seems that the whole Skrull Invasion thing has a religious component to it, and it's based on the Queen of the Skrulls interpretation of their Book of Worlds. Hercules sister, Athena, has gathered a council of all of Earth's Pantheons, and is putting together a team to take on the Skrull's Pantheon. The worry is that if Humanity is wiped out, something called The God-Eater will destroy all of the Human Pantheons.

This issue pretty much just introduces the other Pantheons, and then goes into detail about who they are sending on the trip. Each Pantheon picks one of their own and "The God Squad" (as Cho names them) is born, with Hercules as their leader. Which he isn't all that excited about.

Pretty straight forward issue, nothing exciting really happens. They posse up, and head out, with a little infighting. It'll be interesting to see where it leads.

Thor #9

I was actually a little disappointed with this issue of Thor. First off, he's hardly in it, which isn't that big of a deal. There's a lot going on in the pages, and having some secondary characters have some screen time is actually a good thing. However, why in the HELL does anyone ever listen to Loki?

I mean come on, the guy, well now he's a girl, so I guess it's "she" now, anyway, Loki has never been a good guy/girl. Everyone knows that Loki screws with people, that's what he/she does. I get that everyone is being given a second chance, which is why Loki hasn't been beheaded already, but this is just taking it too far.

The whole issue is Loki screwing with Balder. Manipulating to create dissent among the ranks, and all of that. There's even a big cliff hanger ending that means this whole screwing with Balder thing is going to go on for at least another issue or more.

It's not that it's written bad at all, it plays out ok. They have Loki really work to get under Balder's skin, but after the centuries of Loki being evil, I would just think that everyone would have a little thicker skin when it comes to him, uh….her. It's like turning to the dark side of the force all in one issue.

We'll just have to see how it plays out. I'm not exactly ready to throw in the towel by any means. It's been pretty good so far, and even in this one, the humor has been a lot of fun.

Ok, that's it for now. I know, I'm a slacker, but I did just move, so I'm happy I even found last week's comics in the mess that is my new house. Really happy about the house though, with the icing on the cake that there's a bar and a wine bar within walking distance. Even if it is through a neighbor's yard.

Also, since I was moving, I had to collect all of my older comics up and get them in boxes. I found three covers which I think I'm ashamed to own. I'm not even sure they were bad issues at all, but really bad covers. I scanned them just to share, and you can click on them to see a bigger version, if you dare:

Warlock #18 - I don't really remember what the Infinity Crusade was, other than it was the follow up to the Infinity Gauntlet I think, but this was just a terrible cover, and a quick flip though points to it being a bad issue. The only interesting thing here is that Warlock, Gamora, Moondragon, and Drax are all in this issue, and used poorly. Whereas they showed up in Annihilation: Conquest and became very cool, with all but Moondragon now with the Guardians of the Galaxy, which even after only one issue is now my favorite comic. All about the writing.

Excalibur #67 - I liked Excalibur, so I can't really hack on the issue. Especially since I have no idea what it's about. This is only bad for the shameless Terminator 2 line "Hasta La Vista, Baby". I'm sure they thought it was a cool idea at the time.

Nomad #14 - My god, this is just bad. Nomad started out pretty good, though it was a bit of a rip-off of Lone Wolf and Cub I think. Regardless, the 12-year-old looking guy in the bottom right, with the beard that looks like someone attacked him with a magic marker, is supposed to be Nomad. I'll give you that even before this issue, he sort of looked like Kip Winger with an "N" on his belt, but this was scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Alright, enough of all that. Hopefully I'll have Avengers Invaders #2, Final Crisis #1, New Avengers #41, and Trinity #1 read sometime in the near future, or come Wednesday I'm going to be WAY behind.
