Not As Many Reviews As There Should Be…

I didn't actually make it though Annihilation: Conquest yet, and I didn't get a chance to read anything I picked up this week. Last couple of nights I've been tied up with house stuff, and playing poker. I won money both nights I played poker, so that's always a bonus. Here's what I do have:

Starlord #1-4

Alright, this four issue series was the best of the Conquest tie-ins. The Phalanx have taken over all of Kree space, and they need someone to lead a group of "expendable" people on a mission. The Phalanx have created a viral bomb, and once it's deployed, will infect thousands of worlds simultaneously, and bend them to the Phalanx will. The team is being put together to go in, with low tech weapons so the Phalanx can't detect them, find the weapon and destroy it.

The team is made up of Kree prisoners, which is why they're expendable. Think of the series as the Dirty Dozen, just in space, with only 6 people. Starlord even mentions that himself. The Galactic Dirty Half Dozen?

There's Loverbug, an insectoid who was jailed because he knocked up a Kree. Deathcry, whose a Shi'ar with enhanced strength and all of that. Mantis who believes she's the celestial madonna and will usher in a universal savior. Gabriel Vargas, a human who is the current holder of the Uni-power. Rocket Raccoon, whose a tactical genius. And last on the list is Groot, whose a giant talking tree and self-proclaimed monarch of Planet X. Hell of a crew.

The whole series is a great read, pretty much fun from the first page to the last. Plus, there's little better than seeing a talking tree, holding a talking raccoon, whose firing a heavy machinegun that's as big as he is. As much as I thought a few of the other Conquest tie-ins were just ok, this one totally made up for any shortcomings. Even if you haven't read any of the original Annihilation series, or the newer Conquest, you should really pick these four up.

Nova #13

I'm still really enjoying the Nova series, and this comic was no exception. The writers Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning are really doing a good job with the personal stories, while giving everything a huge Galactic scope. It's an interesting mix. In this issue, Galactus is eating a Kree planet named Orbucen, and Nova has shown up to help get everyone evacuated, because even he knows that he can't stop Galactus once his feeding has begun.

There's also a few other things happening on the planet, such as an evil entity running amok. The issue manages to tackle the entity story line, have Nova argue with the Kree about their class system, have him help save a planet and it's people, and have Nova start to get into it with Silver Surfer. All while the background constantly shows a planet dying around them. Pretty impressive.

Dead Space #3

Not a whole hell of a lot happened in this one to further the story along. Rest assured things do happen, but this issue is more or less a build up to what I'm hoping will be a good issue 4, 5 and 6. In this one, people get crazier, more and bigger bad things happen. Lots of weirdness. They also bring The Marker into the colony, which is the big mysterious and probably evil thing that's causing all the craziness in the first place.

It was still a decent read, but I'm hoping that the next few issues pick up the pace a little bit. I guess there's a game, also named Dead Space, that's coming out sometime around Halloween. I'm guessing that the comics is just a tie-in of some sort. That could end up being super disappointing if the comic book is just a prequel to the game. If this whole series ends with "now go play the game!" I'm going to have to hurt someone over at Image. Doesn't matter who, just as long as they know why.

Secret Invasion #2

I really thought about just giving this one it's own post, but actually, not a whole hell of a lot happens. Might still have to go through it at some point as there are a few gems of info in there, but I'll save those for later. What does happen though, is damn freaking cool.

The comic starts with all of the heroes, and the Skrull heroes, all facing off. Tempers flair, and the fighting begins. It was actually decent, but I would have liked to have seen it really play out a little more. I won't give a lot of details here, but a few of the Skrulls go down, and Hawkeye/Ronin goes all nutjob. I can already feel a rant about that brewing.

The really good stuff about this issue is the art. It's not super amazing art that you want to hang on your wall, but more just the scenes themselves that I thought were very cool. Especially the last splash page. The last splash page evokes all kinds of thoughts of how cool this series could be. It raises the bar pretty high. Seeing as how I thought Civil War was a total let down, and World War Hulk was just average, they better not screw this one up. Give me a good story, but I also want to see a big giant smackdown too.

I probably will do a write up of this issue over the weekend, and I might try to scan in a few of the splash pages. The last one might even need to have it's own post, cause there's a lot going on there.

On Tap

Annihilation: Conquest - Really looking forward to reading this.

Guardians Of The Galaxy #1 - This is what becomes of Starlord and the gang after Conquest, so I'll have to read it after that series. Glad to see it's the same writing team too. It has the potential to be one of my favorites if they keep up the same level of writing.

Titans #2 - We'll see how it goes.

Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four #1 of 3 -  Not sure if this was a good idea or not, but I thought i would give it a chance.

The Last Defenders #3 of 6 - I'm not sure this was a good idea from the get-go. This is really the turning point for the series for me. Although I'll probably still get the other three regardless, mostly because it would bother me to only have half the series, even though I may not like it that much. Maybe I'll give it away as a prize of some sort.

That's it for this week. Only 68 days until SDCC.
