The Friday…er…Sunday Post

Alright, I'll admit that this was supposed to go up on Friday, and I've just been slacking. I'm a slacker.  The other reason was that I really hadn't got around to reading all of this weeks comics either. I ended up playing poker both Thursday and Friday night, and then drinking wine with The Monkey last night (Saturday), so I just didn't get around to reading them. Plus, I'm in the middle of buying a house (which rocks), and had to do a bunch of stuff with the insurance, inspection, estimates to get stuff fixed and so on (which sucked).

I'll give you the rundown of what I have gotten too, and hopefully get the rest up tomorrow.

Avengers Invaders #1

Well, not sure what there is to say about this one really. I probably need to go look around the internet to see what the deal is, but I'm not going to just yet.

Here's the basic idea. The Invaders from World War II, which consist of Captain America, Bucky, Namor, the original Human Torch (not the FF one), Spitfire, Union Jack and Toro. They're fighting Nazis in in WWII, wonder into a green mist, and end up in present day New York. They get into a fight with the Thunderbolts, who were in the middle of trying to arrest Spider-Man, and then they take off to figure out what's going on.

It's the first issue of a 12 issue series, so it was mostly introducing you to the Invaders, which I think they did pretty well. I'm curious to see where they go with it. It seems to be in the present day, with the registration act and all of that, but there's no mention of the Skrulls. I'll just have to see how things go. So far, so good.

Quasar #1-4

This is part of Annihilation: Conquest, and after reading all four issues, I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to reading Conquest, but still have to sit down and read the Starlord series first, before starting it.

There's a lot more going on here than there was in Nova. Telling you exactly what that is would kind of ruin things for you. Very early on, like in the first few pages I think, you get the gist of the series. Quasar is supposed to find the person that can save the Kree from the Phalanx.

There's a couple of changes to the characters in the book, the big reveal of the person they are supposed to find was unexpected, and they did break out the Super Adaptoid as the man bad guy of the series. It was kind of cool to hear him busting out the names of Avengers he was mimicking as he did it, and then turning into a green version of Hawkeye, or Iron Man, Thor and a bunch of others.

The only problem with the series I had was that I wasn't all excited about the main characters all that much. There seemed to be a little too much whining from Quasar about here not being able to use her powers to the fullest yet, her fear of failure and generally not being good enough to be Quasar. They did sort of the same thing with Nova when he first became the last Nova, but that was handled as doubt, and him pretty much just deciding even if he failed, he was at least going to try. Here, Quasar just seems to get through a fight, and then whine how everyone could have done it better. It got a little annoying about the second time, let alone the 30th.

Overall though, I enjoyed it. Not the best main character wise, but everything else going on was well worth the read.

Wraith #1-4

This is another part of the Annihilation: Conquest series, and my least favorite of the series so far. It'll probably be the weakest link for me unless Starlord really sucks it up. Overall, it wasn't that it was bad, it was just that the main character was a little too over the top in the creepy/cool category. He doesn't have a name, wears black, rides a space motorcycle, everyone is scared of him, not much hurts him, laughs at pain, has the cool do anything weapon. He's like the ultimate goth kid, dark and brooding all the time. It was just too much.

This is the first time I've ever heard of him, and they do give his origin in the series, so I'm not sure if this is the characters premiere, or if he was just obscure enough that they thought readers needed to know more about him. Hopefully if they use him a lot more, they rein in the tortured soul bit some.

As for the overall story, it was ok. Good to see Ronan and Super-Skrull again. It's totally just the way that they use Super-Skrull, but he's quickly become one of my favorite characters to come out of Annihilation. The story was a piece of the overall Conquest puzzle, but it seemed to be a smaller piece, and really more about Wraith and his past, than anything else.

Well, that was all I really got through this past week. I have a lot waiting for me, and I'll be trying to get through it in the next day or so. Coming up I have Nova #9, Secret Invasion #2, Dead Space #3, Starlord #1-4, and then Annihilation: Conquest itself #1-6.  As I mentioned, hopefully I'll get to them tonight and tomorrow, and get something up as I read them.

Here's a question for you all, would you rather have a large run though of several comics like this, or have individual ones spread throughout the week? Leave a comment if you want to chime in. Maybe I'll make up some sort of poll or something we can put up, that way you can just click a button and be done. We'll see.
