Short and Sweet
It's only Wednesday and it has already been a long, crazy week for more reasons than are worth listing. And really y'all don't come here to listen to me bitch about anything but comics do you? Anyhow in the interest of trying to actually get some rest I'll be fairly brief tonight.
So you might have heard there was a Con in New York City this past weekend. If you have actually heard of our site and not heard that there was a Con in New York I would be utterly amazed. But just in case, there you go. Clearly it's not yet as big as its counterpart on the west coast (NYCC I think has only been running three years), but I understand it's growing pretty steadily. I think it would cool to check out one year just to do the Con thing in NYC.
I can't say there was too much to be greatly in awe or outraged about announced there. Seems like the big two kinda spent the time hyping things we already knew about in San Diego last year. Afterall, we are just starting the "event season" for DC and Marvel so this Con kinda served as the pre-game festivities for the Super Bowl in a way. I suppose we'll see come San Diego if there is more in the way of post-event books and creative teams to be announced.
I did read that Matt Fraction is writing a three issue Thor mini-series as a tie-in to Secret Invasion. While normally the thought of a tie-in miniseries to the main miniseries makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit, I have to admit I am pretty curious about the book. I read his pitch on the three one shot Thor titles he's got coming out and it sounds incredibly interesting. Fraction has built up a good amount of cred with me due to books like Iron Fist and The Order (which is being cancelled but was still good I thought). Iron Fist has really been one of my favorite books since it launched, which is kinda amazing given I was pretty apathetic about the character beforehand. But when you have someone like Fraction (along with Ed Brubaker, to be fair) who can just boil it down and say "Hey you know, kung-fu billionare is kind of a kickass concept. Let's run with that." it really just clicks well. So given the amount of interest I now have in Iron Fist because of him I'm real interested to see what he can do with the God of Thunder. He's also got a new ongoing Iron title and will be rotating writing duties with Brubaker on Uncanny Xmen. So in theory lots of Matt Fraction goodness to come.
On to the night's reading list (and a few comments):
- Hulk (Red) #3 - I know, I know. This book makes no damn sense. But in two issues we've had a gun big enough for the Hulk put his big mitts around and fire and Rick Jones turns into something called "A-Bomb". Can you honestly tell me you think Loeb wants us to take this book seriously? I think he gets the joke, so should we (or so I hope).
- Batman #675 - Alright, in spite of a complete lack of faith in Dan Didio, I've read and listened to enough stuff from Grant Morrison recently that I've bought the hype on Final Crisis and his "Batman : R.I.P" stories. This issue is the precursor to R.I.P. so I bit.
- Justice League of America #20 - We're finally back to Mcduffie as the fulltime writer so one hopes good things abound.
- Uncanny X-Men #497 - Can you believe I'm buying another X-Title again? I can hardly believe it myself. I hated the "Rise and Fall of Shi-ar Empire" story Brubaker wrote, and I avoided Messiah Complex like the plague (was it necessary to turn Bishop bad? Really?) but for some reason I flipped through this post Complex arc and thought it was good. So here I am back with Uncanny after a long stint away.
- Ultimate Spiderman #121 - It's good to have a consistently good book in your pull is it not?
- Thor #8 - I'm not saying JMS' run on this book thus far has been bad or anything. I'm just ready for Thor to punch somebody is all.
- Mighty Avengers #12 - Now with more Skrully goodness in every issue!
No alcohol tonight as I might just fall asleep mid-comic if I did so. I bet Monkey is somewhere drinking for me though.
