Damn You Colossus!

I'll try not to put in any spoilers in this weeks rundown of the reviews. All of these are from last week, as I didn't get a chance to make it to the comic shop this week. I might try to get in today though, so I' don't miss anything. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know I need a pull at the comic shop. Stop bugging me about it.

I picked this Last Defenders for two reasons really. The first is that it sounds like they were putting the defenders back together, even if it looked like it was only for six issues. I liked the Defenders way back when, and much like the Titans book, a little nostalgia kicked in. Which I have GOT to figure out how to curb that impulse. The second and biggest reason is that Colossus is one of my favorite characters. Throwing him on the cover, under the Defenders name, was just a dirty freaking trick that suckered me in. I blame him if this all goes really bad.

I picked up the first two issues of this, and it's been alright. I already sort of dislike Nighthawk. I'm just not a fan of how he's written here, and I don't think I've ever read anything else with him in it, so I don't have a great reference for him. I don't think I've ever even heard of the Blazing Skull, but I must admit that he's been pretty funny. She-Hulk was mildly interesting.

Overall, if I hadn't picked up issues one and two at the same time, I probably wouldn't have ever made it to issue two. The first issue was all story set up, and I get that you need to do that sort of thing, but since it was mostly Nighthawk, I found it kind of slow. The end of the first issue was decent, and I thought it really picked up in issue two. The first half of issue two was a lot of fun, and the second half slowed down a little bit, but was still decent. I'm sometimes not sure if the writer is going for a fun book, or something that is bouncing back and forth between serious and fun. The fun parts have been good, but everything else has been a little dry. There has been some b-story stuff going on in the background though that seems interesting, and hopefully doesn't end up silly. I'm in for the full six probably, and hopefully we see that whole team throughout the next four issues.

I'm also very upset that my scanner half ate the cover off of issue number one, but that's a different story.

Great cover eh? I think I had looked at this when issue number one hit the shelves, and it didn't really grab me. For some reason, issue two hit, and I decided to pick them both up. I think I'm starting to read comics the same way I watch B-movies, if it's only six issues, I figure what the hell.

This has been a pretty good grab though. It's basically a scifi horror movie with all of the classic plot points. To give you a quick rundown, it takes place on a space colony. The colony finds a mysterious object that some believe to be a religious artifact called a Marker. After it's found, people start going a little nuts, seeing the dead, and bad things start to happen. The religion aspect of the Marker is an interesting twist, in that it seems to be splitting up the colony into believers and non-believers.

Overall, the art is ok, but it's the story that I'm really enjoying. There hasn't been anything Earth shattering, but like a decent horror movie, the writing has kept me interested to see what happens next.

This is still one of my current favorites. It has some great action with Hercules wailing on everything, it's smart with Cho doing all kinds of interesting things with that big brain of his, and is pretty much all about being fun.

As you can see from the cover, Ares and Hercules get into it again this month. The talk between them was just ok, but the fight was fun. This issue pretty much wraps up the story that's been going on since the end of World War Hulk, and at the end, seems to be starting up a new story line, which I'm sure has to have something to do with Secret Invasion. Hopefully they do the same sort of thing they did with WWH, where our heroes aren't involved in the main storyline, but have something of their own going on. Regardless, I'm already looking forward to it.

Alright, that's all for me this week. I'm off to Las Vegas tomorrow for five days, so wish me luck.
