Fantastic Four #554 and #555
Alright, when I read issue #554, I was a little worried. Let's get right to the spoiler alert:
***SPOILERS, SPOILERS, I've got lots of SPOILERS***
Alright, so except for the "Let's all go get ice cream" issue I was a little upset about here, I've been pretty happy with Fantastic Four lately. It's been a lot of fun for the most part.
Now when issue #554 came along, I was turned off by a few things. First, I wasn't all excited about the art at all. It's not bad, I'm just not a huge fan. The second thing was the whole celebrity thing. I get that if there were a real Fantastic Four, they'd be huge media draws and would be all over the magazines. The thing is, I don't care. I don't want to read about their celebrity status, and how cool they are. It's just boring.
Now the actual meat of the story, the whole Nu-World thing, was decent. It was an interesting idea, and I was willing to go along for the ride to see where it was going to go. I figured I'd see what issue #555 held, and decide then if I was going to give it the boot, or there was going to be enough interesting stuff in it to keep me around.
Right off the bat, I'd like to say the whole Johnny Storm part of the story was just freaking stupid. He's the Human Torch, he has his own band, and super villain chicks throw themselves at him in the heat of battle. Freaking lame.
I'll also say that pretty much the second they mentioned "CAP" (or is it Cap?) I knew that he was going to be the bad guy. I mean, come on. How many movies and stories have there been where the super engineered thing didn't bust out and lay waste to everything? Could that have gotten more cliched? I mean, in the history of everything, how many super powerful things escape, and automatically turn off their emergency shut down, or deactivation code? Every damn one of them. Now all they need to do is make him not want to hurt things because he's so human like, give him a dorky human sidekick, and we have another bad 80's television show.
At this point I was leaning toward not getting next month's issue, and then the big giant Captain America thing appeared at the end. Not sure what all is going to happen next issue, but they have me for at least one more. There's just going to be a lot of loose ends if Nu-World doesn't blow up and Reed can't find some super cure for Global Warming that no one else thought of.
I'm betting there's some sort of finish where they somehow blow up Nu-World to kill CAP, and somehow Reed uses the explosion to give the Earth 50 more years. It would be the cliched thing to do. I'm just hoping for a good fight in-between.
