New Avengers #38
Ok, remember the other day when I talked about Thor #6 being a transition issue, and how I liked it? Well, it seems that New Avengers #38 was the same kind of thing, except it was a total waste of my $2.99. COMPLETE waste.
Not a damn thing happened in the issue that is worth a damn really, but I'll put in a spoiler alert anyway. I need to get a freaking graphic for this or something.
***SPOILER ALERT (read the below at your own freaking risk)***
Ok, I get that Luke Cage and Jessica Jones have been part of the New Avengers story line. I've always found it a waste of time, other than a plot device from time to time as Cage explained things to her, or something like that.
In the last issue, the bad guys broke into Dr. Strange's place, there was a big fight, Jessica Jones got out with the baby, and went and asked for asylum with the registered Might Avengers.
I was fine with that. Get her the hell out of the way so I don't have to read about her anymore. But no, they had to dedicate almost a whole freaking issue to their breakup. Cage feels all betrayed, she's all upset because of the fight and danger to the baby. Guess what? I DON'T CARE.
I don't care about their marriage, I don't care that they broke things off, I don't care about the Mighty Avengers having a little discussion about if they should arrest Cage or not. Almost the entire issue was a waste of time, space, and my money. If I wanted to watch a damn soap opera about a relationship I care nothing about, I would be hanging out on the couch watching "Men In Trees" with the wife. Seeing as how not even a three martini dinner is going to get me in there to watch that crap, I hope you can imagine how upset I am that I spent $2.99 to do the same damn thing.
I've liked that comic lately, and hopefully this isn't a preview of things to come.
The only other thing that happened is that they got a new base. Well, apartment. That might be amusing.
All I can hope for is that someone, somewhere, wanted the whole marriage thing out of the way too, and took this comic to lay it to rest. I have a bad feeling though that's not going to happen.

No WAY! I think you’re crazy. Now, this is coming from a long time Jessica Jones fan (I miss Alias like mad!) but the Luke Cage / Jessica Jones marriage has been fantastic. If anything, I’ve been wanting MORE of it in the Avengers!
Seriously, I think this is Bendis doing what Bendis does best. Wonderful, snappy dialog, heart felt emotion and the set of for some great drama in the months to come. Fantastic stuff.
And no, before you ask, I don’t watch “Men in Trees”. =)
I’ve heard that from someone else that mentioned Alias as a favorite of theirs. Maybe I’d have more invested in the relationship if I had read that book at all.
For me, it should have gone this way:
First Panel:
Anyone - “Where’s your wife?”
Cage - “Avengers Tower”
Anyone - “You breaking up or something?”
Cage - “Probably”
Done with that plot point. Begin with the punching of stuff.
OK, if you haven’t read Alias, then I can totally see how this just doesn’t register on your Give-A-Sh!+ meter. Now that I think about it, if you haven’t read Alias, I can see not liking Jessica at all. “Who the hell is this whiney, moody woman that Cage is dragging around with him?!” Would probably be my reaction.
But pick up the TPB of Alias (I saw it at the library last week, if you don’t want to cough up the money), and your attitude will totally change. I don’t know anyone that didn’t just fall in love with her in that book. She’s this totally flawed, damaged woman who is struggling to keep it together, but she never comes off as a victim. Fantastic stuff.
Read that, and then read this issue again, and you’ll probably see it in a whole new way.
